LOWESTOFT woman has died this morning (Tuesday) after a house fire in the town.

The 65-year-old woman was taken to the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, but she later died from her injuries.

“Police can confirm a 65-year-old woman has died following a house fire in Lowestoft this morning, Tuesday, April 20,” a police spokesman said.

The woman was described as being in “cardiac arrest” when paramedics arrived at the blaze in Bishops Walk at 5.58am this morning.

Three fire crews - two from Lowestoft South and one from Normanshurst - had earlier been called to the home in Gunton at 5.40am and the bedroom of the property was “well alight,” according to the fire service.

“Officers were contacted by the fire service just before 6.10am to reports of a fire in a bedroom at an address in Bishops Walk,” the police spokesman said.

“A woman had been found unconscious in the property and she was pronounced dead a short time later.”

The crews from Lowestoft wore breathing apparatus to tackle the flames, which were out by 6.30am.

“Next of kin have now been informed,” the police spokesman added. Police are treating the death as unexplained but there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances at this stage.

“A post mortem and inquest will be held in due course.”
