Lowestoft Youth Action backs campaign

LOWESTOFT Youth Action has endorsed The Journal's Don't Dice With Danger campaign this week by distributing merchandise to youth groups and schools.

The independent group is designed to provide the youth in Lowestoft and Southwold with a voice and project co-ordinator Kay Westgate said she believed the campaign helped to highlight some of their own issues.

LOWESTOFT Youth Action has endorsed The Journal's Don't Dice With Danger campaign this week by distributing merchandise to youth groups and schools.

The independent group is designed to provide the youth in Lowestoft and Southwold with a voice and project co-ordinator Kay Westgate said she believed the campaign helped to highlight some of their own issues.

“I thought I was really great and the kids love the wristbands. It goes along similar lines to us but it definitely had to be promoted a bit more and this is a good way to do it. We are going to give the merchandise out to all the air and sea cadets, the V-Project, Breakout, Colville House Youth Club and Kessingland Youth Club.

“We also have contact with all of the schools and we are going to Sir John Leman in Beccles' awards night so we will give some merchandise out.”

Don't Dice with Danger is now spreading round the region and on Thursday 5,000 posters, postcards, beer mats and wrist bands will be available at the welfare tent at the Latitude Festival.

They are also available from The Journal office in London Road North and various locations including Pleasurewood Hills in Lowestoft, Lowestoft Town Hall and Waveney District Council's Marina customer service centre.

Pubs, clubs, youth organisations, sports clubs and schools are also taking in merchandise.

Journal editor Russell Cook said: “We all want young people to have fun but we don't want them to gamble with their own safety. It is also important to encourage young people to think about their friends and make sure they are safe.”

The six key messages of the campaign are:

Look out for your mates.

Know your surroundings.

Steer clear of trouble.

Enjoy your drinks responsibly.

Tell someone before you leave.

Think about the consequences.

The campaign was launched following a number of tragic incidents in which young people lost their lives as a result of over-exuberance, drinking and drink-driving.

Adnams of Southwold are sponsoring and financially supporting the campaign, which has been inspired by a group of young designers from Spring in Southwold.
