I'M not one to really pay much attention to celebrities' private lives especially when it comes to personal things like divorce.

But who could help not hearing about Paul McCartney and Heather Mills recent separation with it being splashed across the front page of every daily newspaper and every news channel having a reporter camped outside the court where the legalities took place.

I doubt celebrities care at all about what us mere civilians think about them and usually I would agree.

But what with all the reports of Heather throwing water over Paul's lawyer and her extreme outburst on GMTV a few months ago, you can't help but come to the conclusion that that woman court controversy.

She seems to be so inconsistent with everything she says - she says he was a mean husband. It's been calculated that for every hour they were married Paul has paid £700 back to her in settlement money.

In court, the judge comprehensively tore her statements and arguments to shreds.

When you go to court to fight for money it is reasonable to assume that you are going to have to prove what you are claiming.

One effect that this rather messy and drawn-out divorce does have is that it now means that the courts will have to look more carefully at other short-lived marriages.

After all, Heather got £25m so naturally other people will start to try and get as much as they can, too.

Perhaps they won't come away with as much as Heather did but if the courts treat well known people one way, it won't be long until others will demand the same treatment.

Perhaps we shouldn't be so interested in the private lives of celebrities but when it's shoved in your face on a daily basis you can't really ignore it.

What does it say of Heather Mills when she throws a glass of water over a lawyer in court and then steps outside to spend a long time talking to the same media who she claims vilify her every day.

For the short amount of time that the couple were married and for all the stress and trouble it's involved she came away with a huge settlement. But was it a fair one?
