THE Lowestoft Lions are organising a 300m blindfolded walk by a 'Magnificent Seven' group of volunteers to mark World Sight Day.
The group, who are taking part to help raise awareness about the prevention of blindness, includes Waveney MP Bob Blizzard, Lowestoft Mayor Malcolm Cherry, Lowestoft Journal editor Russell Cook, Lowestoft Town Football Club and Kirkley & Pakefield's managers.
The event, which is on Wednesday, October 7 starting at 4pm from the Lowestoft Journal office, follows a warning from The World Health Organisation that the number of blind people in the world could double in the next 25 years.
Event organiser Dave Woodruff said that since the Lowestoft Lions had been founded 49 years ago members had collected thousands of used spectacles to be sent overseas, and donated money to carry out many hundreds of cataract operations. He said the Lions had also helped fund an eye bank in Norwich and free diabetic screening days, as diabetes is one of the main causes of blindness in Britain.
