AN EXCLUSION zone was set up around a property in Gorleston yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) after a major gas leak threatened an explosion in the area.
The cordon measured around 200 metres from the property in Poplar Avenue in the town, near Lowestoft just north of the Suffolk border with Norfolk.
One crew from Lowestoft South fire station were called to help other crews from the Norfolk fire brigade at around 1pm.
A spokeswoman for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said it was a 'serious gas leak.' She said the leak was stopped by 2.15pm, the electrics were isolated and the property was ventilated.
Specialist checks were carried out in the area to ensure there was no risk of explosions because of residue gas in the atmosphere.
Once the checks had been done the exclusion zone was reduced to 50 metres.
The spokeswoman added: 'The property is now free from explosion risk and has been handed over to the gas board.'
