AN unprecedented demand for seats has seen box office records smashed and a popular film being extended for further screenings at Lowestoft's Marina Theatre.

Crowds' queuing outside the venue in the town centre has been a regular sight in the past few days as over 6,000 people have seen the hit Abba musical Mamma Mia! since it began a week long run last Friday.

And such has been the clamour for seats that management at the venue have announced that a further two screenings a day have now been scheduled with performances nightly at 6pm and 8.30pm, running through until next Thursday.

A spokesperson for the Marina told The Journal: “We have had enormous demand for tickets to see Mamma Mia, with over 6,000 people attending screenings since last weekend, having over 700 seats has enabled us to accommodate almost everyone so far and we are confident that these extra performances should satisfy demand.

“With over 700 seats available patrons do have the opportunity to book in advance or just turn up on the door, however advance bookings for the film have been so strong we are recommending that patrons take the opportunity to book their seats early in order to avoid disappointment.”

Adding the extra screenings of Mamma Mia next week has meant a few changes to the venue's previously advertised screenings of Hulk, which will now be screened at 2.30pm on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Meryl Streep leads an all-star cast in the musical, Mamma Mia! The Movie brings the timeless lyrics and melodies of iconic super group Abba to the big screen.

Tickets to see the film, certificate PG, cost £3.50 each with over 60s and children at £2.50. Other films lined up as part of the venue's summer film season include, Space Chimps, Sex and the City, The Mummy Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and The Dark Knight.
