A LOWESTOFT pensioner remained in hospital last night after a dramatic collision saw the man and his partner struck by a car in their front garden.

Neighbours and residents expressed shock as they recalled how they heard a massive 'bang' as details of the collision emerged yesterday.

Police investigations were continuing as a man, believed to be in his 70s, was treated at the James Paget University Hospital, in Gorleston.

Police officers and the ambulance service were called to attend a road traffic collision in Corton Road just after 7.30pm on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Anne-Marie Breach said: 'A lady driving a Fiesta took evasive action to avoid a collision with another car and in doing so then tried to avoid a further collision with another car before going into a fence.

'As a result the car went through one garden, then another before striking a car, which had two people in it.'

The road was cordoned off as the emergency services dealt with the collision.

'The man suffered a broken rib and head injuries and is now in intensive care,' Ms Breach said. 'The lady was injured as well and went to hospital with minor injuries.'

The woman - thought to be his wife - is now believed to be back home recovering from the ordeal and had celebrated her 70th birthday on Sunday.

Details surrounding the crash were still sketchy yesterday, but it is believed that the Fiesta was swerving round a car that had just pulled out of Station Road. The car subsequently went through two fences of houses in Corton Road before it struck the man and woman in the car.

Danny Savage, a chef at the Sun Rise Inn, heard a 'big, huge bang' and thought the road was closed for at least three hours while the scene was cleared.

A number of people stood out the front of the pub looking on, while many others went into the bar to find out what had gone on.

'It is unbelievable how it happened and how the driver herself was not injured,' said a shocked neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous. 'She was very shocked as she was just trying to avoid an accident.'

The driver of the Fiesta was not hurt but suffered shock and passed a breathalyser test at the scene, and yesterday police issued an appeal for information surrounding the collision.

'We are investigating and would like to hear from any witnesses,' Ms Breach said.
