A man has appeared in court charged with attacking former Norwich City player Calum Davenport.

The West Ham defender is reported to have lost 50pc of his blood after he was stabbed in both legs at his mother's home in Bedford on Saturday morning.

Worrell Whitehurst, 25, of Finsley Walk in Derby, appeared at Bedford Magistrates' Court today charged with attacking Davenport and the player's mother, 49-year-old Kim Stupple.

Davenport remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery over the weekend. His mother is said to be recovering well.

Davenport, who has also played for Tottenham, Coventry, Southampton, Sunderland and Watford, made 16 appearances for the Canaries during a loan spell at Carrow Road in 2005, scoring one goal.

Whitehurst will next appear at Luton Crown Court on November 16.
