A quad bike has been destroyed and a car written off after a crash which saw a man airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries.

The rider of the quad bike is in Addenbrooke's hospital in what police said was a 'critical but stable condition' after being thrown from the vehicle after hitting a stationary Vauxhall Corsa.

The crash happened at 7.50pm on Wednesday, July 4, close to the junction of Camp Road on Raglan Street, Lowestoft.

One woman who lives on Raglan Street but did not want to be named said when she heard the crash she instantly knew it was serious.

'We were sitting eating our tea and we heard a huge crash and a bang and we came out and saw the quad bike in the road and I said to my husband 'where is the driver?' and he was just lying in the road.

'He was unconscious and I knew it was serious. The car he hit is a write-off. The quad bike was destroyed and the seat was off.'

She added: 'The road is so busy because they do race down this road too fast, everyone said that to the police last night. People just come down here far to fast. To get out of your car you have to look both ways and make sure nothing is coming.

'It was just a matter of time before something like that happened.

'The medical services were here so quickly and they did a amazing job.'

A spokesman for the police said: 'A white 249cc Jinling quad bike was travelling south on Raglan Street when it was in collision with a stationary Vauxhall Corsa.

'The victim was taken by air ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital for treatment.'

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance service said: 'We were called at 7.53pm after a quad bike rider came off of his bike. An ambulance was on scene in about six minutes, followed by a duty officer and two air ambulances.

'The patient was unconscious and he had suffered major trauma injuries. The crews worked together quickly to stabilise his condition before he was airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital, the region's trauma care centre, for further treatment.'

Anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who has dash-cam footage should contact Roads Policing on 101 and quote incident number 429 of July 4.
