Lowestoft man to honour grandfather’s memory by replicating his 700-mile cycle across Spain

Some 24 years ago, a 59-year-old Peter Mummery conquered the challenge of a lifetime by cycling the entire length of Spain.
Nearly two-and-a-half decades later, his grandson Max Mummery will attempt to replicate the feat in his memory - pedalling exactly the same route, on exactly the same bike, with exactly the same water bottle, wearing exactly the same jersey.
Peter's effort began on May 2, 1995, when he and childhood friend John Wright began cycling the 700-mile route to fund a new £2240 scanner at the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston.
But in early 2018, Peter was diagnosed with prostate cancer and he sadly lost his battle in July at the age of 83.
To honour his grandfather, Max - who grew up in Kessingland - will set off on exactly the same date next month to raise £3,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.
“I said to my grandad before he died that I would do the same journey with the same bike, same water bottle and same jersey,” said Mr Mummery. “When I told him he was very ill but I could tell how proud he was.
“He and his friend stayed in hostels and hotels, but girlfriend will be driving a motorhome and she will meet me at the end of each leg.
“My grandad did it in nine nights and 10 days but there is not so much of a rush for me. Whenever I finish, all my family including my grandma - his wife - will be waiting for me at the end.”
Since deciding to take on the challenge, Max has undertaken a rigorous training schedule to ready himself for the ride from Bilbao all the way down to Nerja.
Having unearthed the bike from his grandad's shed and dusted off the cobwebs, the 29-year-old is busy making the final preparations for the arduous trek.
“I've never done anything like this before so it's pretty daunting every time I think about it,” added Max, who now lives in Harleston. “To start with I didn't have too much belief in myself, but my grandad did it when he was 59 so I'd like to think I can make it.
“I'm not a keen cyclist at all to be honest. I've never really cycled more than about 15 miles - no further than the pub and back!”
