A mixed reaction was given to plans to build 300 homes on the former Sanyo site in Lowestoft at a public consultation.

Residents were asked to give their views at an event held at Colville House on Thursday, February 12.

Three hundred new homes will be built on the site, with 100 being affordable council houses.

The remaining 200 units will be open market and will include a mixture of houses and flats, ranging from one to four bedrooms.

Martin Aust, project manager of the scheme, said: 'If you want to have a vision for the town moving forward from today, then what other uses are there if we are not going to put residential accommodation there?'

However Doug Riley, practice manager for the nearby Victoria Road surgery, said: 'I do think it is the right idea but main concern is the surgery as additional traffic will be difficult for our patients. There are no decent bus routes in this area either so this could have been an opportunity to bring some in.'

Mike Warner, 46, of Heath Road, added: 'They should put the road structure in first then sort out the houses. I know it's late in the day but they should have let Peter Colby use the site for start-up businesses.'

Residents living nearby were asked to give feedback on the proposals and to consider the possible constraints including flooding, traffic problems and green spaces.

The 19.75 acre former Sanyo site is part of the wider Area Action Plan (AAP), which will see the area around Lowestoft harbour regenerated with new jobs, businesses and homes.

Mr Aust added: 'If we put industrial units there, it would actually generate more car usage and more congestion than residential accommodation - and we have proved that.'

Waveney District Council will now review the responses and make its planning application at the end of March.
