Neighbours have described how their houses shook as a car careered off the road and caused significant damage to a wheelchair accessible vehicle and a front wall.

Police are still hunting a man who fled from the scene of the crash on Montgomery Avenue in Lowestoft on Tuesday.

Householders were awoken by the dramatic scenes at around 10.20pm as a VW Beetle Sport was driven into three walls, hitting a lamppost and slightly damaging one car on its way down the road before it spun out of control and ploughed into a red Toyota Verso parked on a driveway.

A police spokesman said: “We were called at 10.45pm last night to reports of a collision on Montgomery Avenue. The VW Beetle Sport vehicle had been driven into a wall and damaged two vehicles.

“The driver of the vehicle has not yet been located so we are trying to track the driver down. We are trying to trace him and are concerned for his welfare following the collision.

“It does appear that the Beetle was taken without consent but officers are trying to locate the driver.”

With the walls of three houses significantly damaged, the owner of the wheelchair accessible Toyota Verso vehicle believes her car may now be a write off.

Gemma Parker, of Montgomery Avenue, said: “If my car had not been there nothing would have stopped him, it would have gone through the front window and it could have been my kids. Both the airbags went off – it was quite an impact.

“It is a seven seat vehicle for my disabled son – our only means of transport – and at the end of the day my kids are missing out as I have been unable to get my child to school in south Lowestoft.

“My child was worried about him and asked the driver if he was alright – for him to then look up at my child and then run off is awful.”

Stacey Hanson lives in the first house on the corner of El Alamein Road and Montgomery Avenue, where the initial damage was caused.

Miss Hanson said: “I heard a massive screech and then a loud bang – it shook the house – so I ran to the kitchen as I thought a vehicle had come through the house.

“I had only got home ten minutes before and the car must have been going some speed. Walls can be repaired and I’m just grateful no one was hurt.”
