FLY tipping in Lowestoft is still on the increase, according to busy street cleaners.

Compared to the same five-month period last year there has been 135 more reports.

But Mike Daniels, street cleansing manager at Waveney District Council, said this could be down to the Keep Lowestoft Tidy Campaign with the public more inclined to come forward to report incidents.

“However, it could also be the case that more people are simply not bothering to take their waste to the recycling centre,” he said.

“On a more positive note, we are still maintaining our target of removing the majority of fly-tipping within 24 hours of receiving a report. The team is proud of removing 98.1pc of fly-tips in this time.”

Mr Daniels said they had received more than 30 reports recently in the Lowestoft area including bags from Corton Road, Reeve Street and the Causeway.

Bicycles have been removed from Wollaston Road and Fen Park play area, beds in Trafalgar Street, Selby Street and Bevan Street, tree cuttings in Alexandra Road and televisions in Rushton Drive and Whiting Road.

One unusual object uncovered was a snooker table which had to be disposed of from Hollingsworth Road.

In addition to fly-tipping the team has been weed pulling and the weed spraying team is currently operating in Lowestoft.

Mr Daniels said: “This is the strongest growth in weeds that I have seen for many years. I think it is down to the long dry spell we have had recently.

“Government legislation states that we are not allowed to spray areas before the weeds grow, so we have to wait until they sprout and then use a contact spray. It is therefore a time-consuming task, but it is more effective in the long-term.”
