The Yarmouth and Waveney Primary Care Trust (PCT) is taking steps to learn from an outbreak of the Clostridium difficile infection, known as C Diff, which happened in Kent. It is thought to have been the main cause of death in about 90 patients and contributed to the deaths of about 270 patients between April 2004 and September 2006.
A PCT board meeting on Wednesday will hear about the PCT's plans to learn from the outbreak at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, which was the subject of a damning report from the Healthcare Commission in October. A report from the PCT's medical director Chris Price says: “It is unlikely that the issues highlighted by the Healthcare Commission are unique to the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. All NHS organisations need to examine their own performance”
The PCT, which has often been short staffed at its community hospitals in Halesworth, Beccles and Southwold, is recruiting this month to bring staff numbers up to what they should be.
