THE funeral service took place at All Saints and St Margaret's Church, Pakefield on Monday, September 29, for Ivo Allen Spindler, of Pakefield, who died on September 14, aged 89.

THE funeral service took place at All Saints and St Margaret's Church, Pakefield on Monday, September 29, for Ivo Allen Spindler, of Pakefield, who died on September 14, aged 89.

The Rev Heather Wilcox officiated.

Ivo served in the Royal Marines for 12 years during and after the second world war reaching the rank of sergeant. He served on HMS Dragon, HMS Kent and HMS Superb including service on the Russian convoys, patrolling the Albanian coast, spending time in Haifa (Palestine), Africa and Singapore.

On leaving the Royal Marines he spent many years working for the local shipyards of Richards and Brooke Marine. After his wife Eva died in 2006, Ivo's health deteriorated and his last weeks were spent in James Paget Hospital and Lowestoft General Hospital where he sadly died.

His funeral service was marked by the Lowestoft branch of the Royal Marines Association providing a guard of honour and standard bearer. His coffin was piped into the church and a very moving service conducted by the Rev Heather Wilcox concluded with a bugler from the Portsmouth naval base playing the Last Post.

Ivo was always proud to be a Royal Marine and their attendance at his funeral would have made him a very happy man.

All the following were from the Royal Marine Association: J Maude, L Manners, C Brown, R Hickmont, J Greengrass, A Middleton-Stewart, L Hossack, J Rogers, T Johnson, W Montgomerie, I Bond, Mr and Mrs B Howard.

Unavoidably absent were: Capt Jack Strong MN, and sons Jim and Andrew Strong from Newfoundland, Canada, Mr and Mrs D Spindler, Mrs B Knowles, Mr and Mrs B McNeil.

Funeral arrangements were by R Rivett Ltd, 15 Carlton Road, Lowestoft.

The family of Mr Ivo Allen Spindler wish to thank all relatives and friends for their many kind expressions of sympathy, beautiful floral tributes and donations received.
