Police last night had still not disclosed why parts of a major trunk road between Norfolk and Suffolk were closed for more than 24 hours while teams of officers carried out a massive search of the area.

Officers called in a helicopter and firefighters to help search a piece of land near the Hopton roundabout on the A12 after a member of the public reported seeing some suspicious activity on Sunday night.

And police confirmed last night said that one traffic lane on the A12 going towards Lowestoft would remain closed to motorists until early this morning.

There was a continued heavy police presence in the area during the whole of yesterday as search teams scoured the locality, which also included the old A12 road.

Last night the police would not elaborate on why more than half a dozen officers were called to the Hopton roundabout at about 11.30pm on Sunday after a motorist reported some suspicious behaviour.

The Norfolk Fire Service helped light the search area during the initial hours of the search and a police helicopter was bought in to try and hunt for any clues.

Police spokeswoman Jenna Smith said last night: “A report was received from a member of the public of what they thought was suspicious activity close to the old A12 road at Hopton.

“Officers from Norfolk Constabulary are at the location carrying out enquiries in the area in an attempt to substantiate the report.

“The area of the A12 which has been closed yesterday will remain so until early today.”

It is expected that the police will reveal further information about the major search this morning.

Anyone with information on the suspicious activity at Hopton can call Norfolk police on 0845 4564567.
