Being considered among the best in the world sometimes means baring all in the pursuit of excellence.

And one group of like-minded hopefuls are taking that very literally this weekend.

David Ellis, from Lowestoft, will be one of the many leaving their clothes behind as they head to Blackpool in the hope of smashing the Guinness World Record for the number of people riding a rollercoaster naked.

The 52-year-old said: “I am very much looking forward to it. I have been involved in the previous attempts and it was only about a week ago that it was all confirmed.

“While it means going up to Blackpool, I didn’t want to miss out on this opportunity to break the record again.

“It is also a bit of fun and an opportunity to do something you wouldn’t normally do and something a bit crazy.

“Whether we are successful depends on how many people turn up. Only time will tell.”

The current record stands at 102 people, including Mr Ellis, who rode Green Scream at Adventure Island, in Southend, on August 8 2010, raising £22,000 for the Bosom Pals appeal at Southend University Hospital’s breast cancer unit.

Saturday’s effort will take place on the iconic Grand National at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Built in 1935, the rollercoaster features two racing carts vying for the finish line.

Mr Ellis said: “It is an 84-year-old wooden rollercoaster so it could be a bit bumpy, but it will be an interesting ride.

“I have been involved in all of the previous attempts and I have probably ridden more rollercoaster naked than anybody else in the world.

“It is not the sort of thing most people would do.”

Saturday will be Mr Ellis’ fifth attempt at claiming the world record, after first breaking it at Thorpe Park in May 2004, then Alton Towers three months later, before beating the record again in 2010.

In 2015, Mr Ellis joined 56 others attempting to beat the record again at Southend’s Adventure Island, but fell short of the title.

He first rode a rollercoaster naked in 1999 as part of a social event in Wales.
