There were new winners of a popular annual contest as a flipping great time was had by all.

Lowestoft's annual Pancake Day race was held on a chilly Shrove Tuesday – with a record number of teams armed with frying pans as they battled it out in the town centre.

Britain's most easterly pancake races saw a record 20 Lowestoft-based businesses and organisations hit the starting line all hungry for success as they competed in the Lowestoft Vision event.

A fine turnout of excited onlookers cheered the teams on in London Road North as the crowds lined the course outside Beales department store.

The event kicked off with the mascot race, with Access Ant from Access Community Trust triumphing for the third time, after beating Sentinel Leisure Lowestoft mascot Kipper in the final.

The main pancake race then saw teams battling it out over three rounds on the specially-set course. The teams of three competitors battled the windy conditions and raced against each other over a short course, flipping pancakes as they dashed the distance. Competing in five heats, teams were sent back to the starting line as pancakes were dropped or not flipped three times.

East Coast Recovery, Hoseasons, Drives 4 U, The Beach and the Marina Theatre progressed into the semi-finals, with Drives 4 U and The Beach reaching the final.

And after a close race it was first time entrants Drives 4 U who sprinted to victory as the team of Myles Penfold, Connor Marshall and Matt Roberts were crowned champions. They lifted the coveted trophy and also won pancakes at the High Street Café in Lowestoft.

Admitting 'team spirit' was a key to their success, a Drives 4 U spokesman said: 'It's great to be part of something local like this. It is the first time we have taken part and we would like to defend our title next year.'

Delighted to have secured another win, Access Ant, from Access Community Trust, dedicated his victory to Parkrun Lowestoft.

A spokesman for Lowestoft Vision, the town's business improvement district, said the event was another great success.

'We have had a record amount of teams enter this year and a great number of people turned out,' the spokesman added. 'It was very close in the final and our thanks go to everyone for taking part.'
