New parking plans needed at village

WHEN I first came to Covehithe there were just a handful of visitors on sunny day but now we can have 50 or 60 plus cars at any one time. This summer we have had unbelievable congestion

I contacted the county council highways department to see if anything could be done to prevent what most weekends and holidays is a health and safety hazard, not to mention an unbearable living environment for residents.

We have been verbally abused and threatened on several occasions by some visitors and have, at some point, been prevented from leaving or entering our properties by badly parked vehicles.

The residents that live in the village have agreed that the situation cannot continue. It will only get worse if we do not do something now.

None of us wish to stop visitors to the church, indeed we encourage and welcome them. We all love our church and take a very keen interest in it.

This is why there will be no yellow lines outside the church. These visitors are not the problem. It is the ones that come in their cars, vans and camper vans, park them badly and then go off to the beach for the day.

There is a footpath to the beach clearly signed and we wish to encourage people to use this route. It is a safe route to the beach. Cliff erosion is a huge problem. This is the main reason for the gate that is planned. The highways department and Benacre Estate are simply bringing forward the barrier that has now almost fallen into the sea .The cliffs are dangerous and as such a huge health and safety issue. There is no legal access to the beach and cliffs from this road. There are plans for plenty of parking away from the centre of the village.

People will be able to enjoy our lovely village as before but in a much safer and friendly way.
