A new phone system designed to ensure calls to the police's non-emergency number are dealt with quickly and efficiently is now live.

The system for Suffolk Constabulary's contact and control room was launched earlier this month and enables control staff to identify and prioritise the most important calls which come through on the 101 number.

Once a call has come through, the system allows a trained switchboard operator to assess and present the calls with the highest risk to have their call taken.

Police say it will help the force to redirect non-urgent or non-relevant calls and focus on the core business of the police.

Chief Inspector Matt Rose said: 'This new digital system gives us a lot of flexibility. As we continue to embed the system we will be able to take full advantage of the technology to offer different ways to contact police to suit changing public needs.'
