A NEW campaign launched by police in Waveney is urging people in abusive relationships to think about the effect their actions have on their children.

A poster featuring X-rays of the human body with broken bones and bearing the question 'Enjoy your break?' and 'What will your children's memories be this summer?' will be put up around the east coast over the next few weeks.

Detective Inspector Terry Jones, from the north-east Suffolk Police Victim Care Centre, said: 'We want parents to consider the impact the abuse is having on their sons or daughters who may be witnessing verbal or violent attacks on a daily basis.

'Latest figures show children were present in 50pc of all domestic abuse incidents reported in Waveney between April and June, which is higher than the county average of just under 45pc.

'Alcohol is also a factor in many of these incidents - and again the Waveney tally of 45.4pc involving alcohol is higher than the county average of 39.2pc.

'Summer, like Christmas, can be particularly stressful as children may be home more often to see incidents, and families spend more time together. Last year there were more than 1,700 incidents reported in Suffolk between July and September. Too often too much sun and too much alcohol can be a recipe for disaster.'
