Former Norwich North MP Ian Gibson has become president of the city and district branch of the United Nations Association (UNA) this afternoon , pledging to put the organisation on the world stage.

Fresh from a trip to America, where he heard US President Barack Obama speak and watched the dramatic defeat of Serena Williams at Flushing Meadows, Dr Gibson said he is planning to be a hands-on member of the UNA branch, which celebrated its 60th birthday last year.

“I think we can come up with new foreign policy which will put the Norwich branch on the world stage,” he said, adding that he was pleased to be asked to become president of such an established and prominent organisation.

The Norwich association was formed by four members, including current vice-president Lady Ralphs, and at its peak hundreds of people packed meeting halls to discuss the issues of the day.

Because the UNA is independent of the UN system and receives no funding from it, they can also be critical of its decisions and activities when needed.
