Police have dismissed as 'routine inquiries' reports they are attempting to trace a former girlfriend of Norfolk-born serial killer Steve Wright.

It was reported that officers from Suffolk police have been looking for a 'first girlfriend' of Wright, who he worked with at the Brudenell Hotel in Aldeburgh more than 30 years ago.

But a Suffolk police spokeswoman said: 'We are conducting various inquiries into where Steve Wright was prior to his conviction. This is part of those routine inquiries.'

Wright, 51, formerly of London Road, Ipswich, was convicted last year of the murders of Tania Nicol, Gemma Adams, Anneli Alderton, Paula Clennell and Annette Nicholls.

The five sex workers were killed and their bodies dumped at sites in the Hintlesham and Nacton areas in late 2006.

The former forklift truck driver, who was born in Erpingham, near Aylsham, and briefly ran The Ferry Boat pub in King Street, Norwich, in the late 1980s, has been told he will die in prison for committing the murders.

It is understood Wright worked at the Brudenell Hotel, which is on Aldeburgh seafront, soon after leaving school.

It was there where he met the woman who police are trying to contact. It is believed she was also employed by the hotel.
