New vehicle unveiled in Lowestoft

AN additional cleaning vehicle has been hired to keep on top of the increased fly tipping in Lowestoft with more than 30 collections being made this week alone.

The team behind keeping the town tidy have spent hours picking up unwanted furniture, metal and rubbish.

And Mike Daniels, cleansing service manager for Waveney District Council, said he was disappointed with the amount of items that were dumped instead of being taken to the household waste recycling centre.

He said: 'It appears that some people have got new bikes over the Easter break as we have been busy picking up the old ones. We have recovered frames from Stradbroke Road, Kevington Drive and Dene Road.

'What's disappointing is that if you break down the frame and the metal part of the wheels you are able to put it in your blue recycling bin. If it doesn't fit, then any metal parts can be taken the household waste recycling centre.'

Bags were also collected from Queen's Road, Thurston Road, Arnold Street, Norwich Road, Chapel Street and Suffolk Road, while furniture was left in London Road South, tyres along Castleton Way, and a television, wood and more bags in Cambridge Road.

On a more positive note volunteers have come forward and cleaned areas along the cliff at Lowestoft's north beach.

Mr Daniels said: 'This was a great help to us and showed that there are people out there who care about the area they live in.

'The volunteers managed to collect around 20 bags of rubbish, a car bonnet, a lot of plastic and some supermarket trolleys. This was an excellent effort by all those involved and we'd like to express our gratitude for all their hard work.'

Meanwhile, the cigarette bin trial taking place across the town has been extended with four more bins being installed.

One will be placed in the High Street's market area and others at the junctions of Milton Road, Regent Road and Gordon Road.
