Conditions at a petting zoo have not breached any animal welfare regulations, a council has said following a recent inspection.

It comes after concerns were raised and more than 2,000 people signed a petition campaigning for improvements at Pets Corner Farm Park, in Oulton Broad.

The attraction has been the subject of numerous social media complaints and photos posted online appear to show animals in poorly maintained enclosures.

Customers have commented they are worried about welfare issues, but Waveney District Council (WDC) has moved to reassure the public that the animals are in good health.

A WDC spokesman said: 'The council is aware of concerns that have been raised and we are currently in discussion with the business owners.

'We have visited the premises and are satisfied there are no animal welfare issues which require action. We will continue to carry out regular inspections and will ensure appropriate action is taken if any welfare issues are identified in the future.'

So far, the online petition demanding change - entitled 'Pets Corner Lowestoft, unsuitable living conditions for animals housed' - has amassed more than 2,200 signatures in just over a week, surpassing the target of 2,000.

The ipetition, started by Brendan Silver, is accompanied by a description which says the zoo has not kept to 'basic cleanliness and housing requirements for the animals that are housed there', before claiming the animals 'need rehousing' or the site 'needs closing down.'

Mr Silver said he felt gaining signatures would be a 'strong way for people to show how they feel and register an objection to how the animals are being housed.'

Among those to express dismay at the conditions is Charlotte Leggett, from Carlton Colville, who was saddened after a recent visit to Pets Corner.

'I used to visit when I was younger but it has changed so much,' said the 26-year-old. 'The animals looked so sad and lifeless. It was completely run-down. At one point we were picking grass to give to the horses to feed them as they had none inside their enclosure.'

A spokesman for Pets Corner said: 'Environmental health officers visited us on Wednesday and we are awaiting the return of their report. Until they get back to us, that is all we are commenting.'
