ANTI-NUCLEAR campaigners will be staging a protest on a Suffolk beach over the Easter weekend.

Members of Stop Nuclear Power Network will be camping at Sizewell from today until Monday.

The event, which takes place close to Sizewell B nuclear power station, is now in its third year and a number of activities are planned.

Tomorrow there will be a rally at the entrance to the power station and a public meeting in nearby Leiston.

The following day there will be workshops, discussions and guided tours on the beach and on Monday commemorations related to the Chernobyl disaster, which happened 25 years ago. Camp co-ordinator Mell Harrison, from Beccles, said: 'Around the world, people are questioning the safety of nuclear power in the wake of events in Japan.

'We may not have many major earthquakes in England, but the low-lying Suffolk coast is highly vulnerable to flooding, and rising sea levels and storm surges can be expected in years to come due to climate change.

'What right do we have to gamble with our children's future? What we need are community-based energy solutions, not more nuclear dinosaurs. When it comes to accidents at nuclear power stations its not a case of if, but when.'

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said they were aware of the proposed protests and would be monitoring the situation.
