New bungalows have been built on land that has been vacant for a number of years.

And at an official opening ceremony last month, the two new almshouses were unveiled in Corton.

It comes after the trustees of the Corton Almshouse charity agreed that there was a need to provide further accommodation for older residents of the ancient parish of Corton – with building work starting on the project in October last year.

An official opening ceremony to mark the opening of the new bungalows in Fowlers Crescent took place on November 25.

Waveney District Council chairman Frank Mortimer, and his wife Trish, were invited along to cut the ribbon.

In his welcoming speech, Mr Mortimer thanked the trustees for inviting him, and thanked the residents and the wardens for attending, along with Philip Baker from MAP Builders who had constructed the bungalows.

Mr Mortimer said: 'It is a great honour to be invited to officially open these very well built and well laid out bungalows and it was a pleasure for Trish and myself to meet the residents afterwards and enjoy tea and homemade cakes at the village hall.'

Chairman of the Corton Almshouse Charity, Fred Taylor, said: 'We were delighted that councillor Mortimer and his wife were able to attend and mark this special occasion.

'The trustees are very pleased to provide these further two bungalows to add to the existing 14 bungalows that make up the charity.

'The land had been sitting empty for many years and it was always the intention to build further bungalows on it if the need arose,' Mr Taylor added.

'We hope that these bungalows will offer additional secure, comfortable and affordable accommodation to older residents of Corton.'
