A state-of-the art day care provision has been showcased to the public at an official opening.

The Otium Centre held a successful open day celebration event on Saturday after a £65,000 transformation of the former medical centre in Oulton.

The privately owned day care centre for young adults with additional needs is now welcoming new members – just over six months after management collected the keys to the facility in Meadow Road,

But after many hours of hard work from owners Ivan and Carol Johnson and Clive Morris, dreams of creating a modern and fun-loving day care facility with a relaxed, warm and welcoming atmosphere have become reality.

With their first paying customer experiencing the facility last year, The Otium Centre received accreditation from Suffolk County Council in November – meaning it is now able to accept referrals from Adult Social Services as well as those with personal budgets.

The day care centre for adults with physical and learning difficulties has transformed the former Oulton Medical Centre facilities, which closed in 2015 after serious concerns were raised by the Care Quality Commission.

Clive Morris, finance director said: 'We've been here since June and it was a bit of a shock when we came in and saw the state of the facilities. It was a tall order to get everything done between June and September and I am pretty gobsmacked we are open.'

With the centre aiming to develop valuable life skills for members by providing new experiences for them, it is the 'attention to detail' provided at this modern facility that 'makes it look really special,' according to Mr Morris.

Whether it is in the American Diner – situated in a former consulting room – being creative in the craft room, relaxing in the cinema and performance areas or enjoying the rebound therapy trampoline in the sensory room area or hot tub, there is a diverse range of activities available.

Mr Morris said the 'target age range' for members is 18 to 35. Future projects include improving the garden area to create a secure environment for outdoor activities – with archery sessions, picnics, barbecues and a raised veggie plot among the aspirations.
