At the meeting on October 14 Mary Spicer showed slides and talked about water based materials. She felt that whilst pure watercolour was a wonderful medium, it was also the most difficult for most people. To help overcome all the problems, she suggested using inks, thin acrylic, gouache, masking fluid, etc, as aids to making paintings less frustrating. She showed slides of her work and pointed out the various ways of using different mediums. Mary brought several of her own paintings in order to make clear all the ways of dealing with transparent washes, splattering, and blotting out. She established her drawing with permanent sepia ink so that the image wasn't lost and she used sandpaper, toothbrushes, pens and even applied cotton wool when applying the paint for clouds. She told members that William Bowyer drew everything with cerulean blue because it disappears when paint is applied. Shadows could be painted firstly with acrylic and then overlaid with watercolour as they would then stay put. Members were asked to bring items for the next week's auction.
