The Lowestoft Lions' 17th annual Gala Day on August Bank Holiday Monday promises another fun-filled day with entertainment for all ages, whilst raising funds for their valuable charity work in the local area.

This year's event, being held at Nicholas Everitt Park, Oulton Broad, covers a varied programme of music, dance, comedy, arena displays, motor boat racing and the renowned 'Maiden in Distress' competition, as well as a Punch and Judy Show, funfair and selection of stalls, with fireworks forming a perfect close to the day.

Kicking off at 9am, the happy atmosphere generated by the Chester Mazing show with his comedy magic, music, juggling, balloon animals and crazy games encourages participation from young and old alike.

Guitar George will be performing a selection of music including Chuck Berry, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison and Dire Straits as well as other popular guitar tracks, and specializes in guitar instrumentals from The Shadows; he has most recently appeared on ITV's 'Dancing on Ice' whilst singing, playing guitar and riding a unicycle simultaneously.

The Gala Day arena will be featuring displays from the Above and Beyond Trapeze Show, the Lowestoft Alsatian and Dog Training Society, Rebelpro USA-style wrestling, The Eagle and Vulture Show, The Waveney Valley Brass Ensemble, The Waveney Gym Club and the Jumpinjax dance group. Hospital Radio Yare will be playing at various times throughout the day to keep you informed of events as they take place.

For 'Maiden in Distress' teams are provided with timber, polythene sheeting, nails and string from which they must attempt to construct a boat capable of ferrying four people to a raft on the Broad, to collect a 'Maiden' and return safely to the Park - no other materials allowed!

For the evening, there is music from exciting local band Monkey Island performing pop, rock and funk tracks, with Dynamic Fireworks Ltd again responsible for the spectacular Lowestoft Lions Musical Firework Display from 9pm.

Entry to Gala Day is priced at 6 for adults and 1 for under-15s, and there is a free Park and Ride service available from the A146 Beccles Road and Ivy Lane, Oulton Broad areas. All money raised goes towards helping the community and not administration costs.
