CONTROVERSIAL plans for a £2m extension for a landmark hotel in Oulton Broad have been approved.

Anglia Restaurants was granted permission by the Broads Authority to add 13 bedrooms to the Wherry Hotel, and to refurbish its restaurant, bar areas and function room. Its plans also include new indoor and outdoor play areas.

The company was given permission by the Broads Authority’s planning committee last Friday to build the single-storey extension to the rear and side of the building and create a first and second floor bedroom block over the existing Brown Boat Suite function room.

The Broads Society had criticised the extension, saying the plans showed a “distinct lack of imagination” for such a prominent waterfront building and that they were not in keeping with the character of the surrounding area.

Neighbours also objected over traffic, parking and drainage concerns.

At the same meeting, permission was given to Enterprise Inns to extend and refurbish the Commodore pub in Commodore Road, Oulton Broad. The work will create more dining space and improves its gardens overlooking the Broad. The pub closed last year due to the economic climate and problems encountered by the licensed trade.
