TWO men have been jailed after admitting the burglary of a service station in north Suffolk.

John Hough, from Commercial Road, Lowestoft, and Jeff McKeown, of The Boulters, Gorleston, appeared at Lowestoft Magistrates' Court yesterday (Tuesday).

Both pleaded guilty to the burglary of Kessingland service station, south of Lowestoft, on June 13.

Hough, 28, had also earlier pleaded guilty to going equipped on February 26 and a failure to surrender to court on June 16.

Prosecuting, Colette Griffiths said a PCSO spotted a break-in at the service station just before midnight on June 13.

She said: 'McKeown was hiding and lying near a BMW. Another police officer attended and a stolen flat-screen TV, a monitor and video was found outside.

'McKeown was arrested and Hough was found in a Peugeot on the A12 leading towards Kessingland at about 12.40am.'

She said items stolen from the service station included several bottles of alcohol, clipping lighters and a quantity of Tic-Tacs.

In mitigation, Calvin Secker said: 'In terms of Mr McKeown, he was found with his hand in the cookie jar. He feels he made a terrible mistake. He came out of jail and he's been out of trouble for six to seven months and got in with the wrong crowd.

'As far as Mr Hough is concerned, he effectively confessed it all in the presence of a jailer, shouting in effect that he was driving back to the scene.

'Hough is going through a very difficult period in his life. His girlfriend is three months pregnant. They live together but they are about to be made homeless.'

District judge David Cooper took no action on McKeown, 22, breaching his licence but jailed him for 24 weeks for the burglary offence.

Hough was jailed 24 weeks for the burglary, eight weeks consecutively for going equipped and two weeks concurrently for the Bail Act offence.
