Popular postcard auction boosts the arts

A popular postcard auction has been hailed as another great success.
The annual Pakefield Postcard Auction took centre stage as a live online event last week.
With the auction run by the Ferini Art Gallery in Pakefield, it raised funds for Suffolk Artlink – as virtual became reality for the Halesworth-based arts charity.
The event was held in real-time from the Durrants Auctions website as it was hosted by auctioneer Nicholas Rudge and beamed live into people’s homes from their auction rooms last Wednesday, September 23.
Given a face-to-face auction could not go ahead as planned due to the current Government guidelines, the auction saw postcard-sized artworks – donated by established and up-and-coming artists across the county – showcased in a mix of media.
Event organiser, Michaela Hobbs, manager of the Ferini Art Gallery in Pakefield, thanked everyone for making this “another successful Pakefield Postcard Auction.”
A spokesman for the organisers added: “With the help of Giles and Emma, Nick Rudge performed his usual skills to a virtual audience, who purchased the artist’s virtual to real translation from a real world to help Suffolk Artlink engage others in this creative and beneficial process.
“We chose Suffolk Artlink because we felt that a lot of artists have supported us in supporting other charities and good causes, we thought it was appropriate to give something back to ʻthe artsʼ.”
With buyers bidding online for the 90 artworks in the auction from as far afield as Staffordshire, Bicester, Tring and London, there were also lots of local buyers from Lowestoft, Halesworth, Norwich and Woodbridge.
The highest hammer price of the event saw lot 55, entitled Boundless - Oil, sell for £200 – as the auction reached total sales of £2,931.
Suffolk Artlink is a participatory arts charity that develops and delivers inclusive arts programmes in communities that bring skills, support networks, confidence and joy to people in the east.
The 2021 Ferini Art Gallery calendar is now on sale.
It features 26 of the 90 postcards that were auctioned this year and costs £6 (A4) or £10 (A3).
