Inspiring pupils to lead a healthy and active lifestyle is top of the agenda at one Waveney school.

And last summer pupils at Pakefield Primary had the privilege of meeting Olympic star Sally Gunnell OBE, who spent the day talking to pupils about her sporting career, offering advice on keeping fit and signing autographs.

The former track and field athlete delivered a whole school assembly during her visit last July and joined in with the school's health and wellbeing sessions.

Last summer, Pakefield Primary School became the flagship school for Premier Transition, which offers three school transition programmes - Play-Trition, Fun-Trition and Fit-Trition - to ensure a 'whole school approach' to health and wellbeing.

All three programmes are on offer at Pakefield and the scheme also gives parents the chance to attend fitness classes at school as they pick up or drop their children off.

And with Pakefield setting a shining example to schools nationally, PE lead Michael Fleckney said the programme had been welcomed by both children and parents.

Speaking during the visit he said: 'Leading a healthy lifestyle is so important for everyone, so it's vital that we are educating children on both how they can do this and why they should be doing it. The programme is doing just that and I think the practical elements – the little things that children can take home with them and implement immediately – are so valuable. All the pupils have really embraced the sessions and we've had some excellent feedback from parents.'

The EDP and Norwich Evening News has teamed up with Sports for Schools to launch a campaign which will see schools and communities collect tokens to win a share of a £20,000 sports kit cash pot.

From Monday until April 14, tokens will be printed in every edition of the newspapers.

The top three schools with the most tokens – calculated on a pro rata basis based on pupil numbers – will receive prizes of £5,000, £3,000 or £2,000, while schools which collect 1,000 tokens will receive a free sports pack.

Schools can register by emailing sportsforschools@archant.co.uk with the school's name, address, postcode, contact name, telephone number and the number of pupils at the school.
