Pakefield Primary School is building healthy lifestyle lessons into its curriculum, and has been educating pupils about how and why they should lead a healthy lifestyle.

Based around four principles of eating well, drinking well, moving well and sleeping well, the programme, known as 'Fun-trition' is designed to teach children about making healthy life choices.

Lessons involve practical tips for children such as the importance of drinking enough water, basic cooking skills and the meaning of calories and nutritional information. The pupils have also been exploring the human digestive system, with teachers using a dummy to demonstrate how food passes through the body.

Children currently receive weekly lessons on the topic, with one class benefitting every half term, although the school does plan to expand the initiative from September.

Michael Fleckney, PE lead at the London Road school, says the programme has been welcomed by both children and parents.

'Leading a healthy lifestyle is so important for everyone, so it's vital that we are educating children on both how they can do this and why they should be doing it,' he said.

'The programme is doing just that and I think the practical elements – the little things that children can take home with them and implement immediately – are so valuable.

'All the pupils have really embraced the sessions and we've had some excellent feedback from parents, so absolutely plan to continue, and hopefully expand, the programme next year.'

The programme is delivered by Premier Transition, which aims to inspire healthy changes and develop a whole school approach.

Year 3 pupil Taylor said: 'We have learnt about how healthy food is and we learnt how much sugar was in fizzy drinks.'

Year 2 pupil Katie added: 'The packets on food tell you about the fats, sugars and energy inside. Some energy is good and some energy doesn't last very long.'
