A CELEBRATION of the life of a former Lowestoft fisherman who settled in Africa will be held tomorrow afternoon.David 'Jumbo' Jarvis, pictured right, was born in Lowestoft in 1946 and spent most of his working life based from the town, before leaving Britain's east coast behind for Africa's west coast.
A CELEBRATION of the life of a former Lowestoft fisherman who settled in Africa will be held tomorrow afternoon.
David 'Jumbo' Jarvis, pictured right, was born in Lowestoft in 1946 and spent most of his working life based from the town, before leaving Britain's east coast behind for Africa's west coast.
Mr Jarvis worked as a fisherman and out to sea on pipelines and rigs before travelling the world.
During his travels he discovered Sanyang, in Gambia. He fell in love with the village and kept returning there, before finally setting up home eight years ago.
He was the first white settler in the village and was welcomed into the local community.
Mr Jarvis even helped to sponsor the son of one of his guards, who is studying now in London.
Mr Jarvis was 63 when he died. He was buried in Gambia on January 16, and
the celebration of his life by his former Lowestoft pals will get under way
at the Ole Frank, at Oulton, tomorrow from 1pm.
He left sons Craig and Shane and grandchildren, Cian, Farren, Olivia and Mitchell.
