AMBITIOUS plans to reunite former schoolmates of Lowestoft Grammar School are continuing to gather pace.

In May we featured former Lowestoftian Mike Bristow who, despite living in Minnesota, USA, was spearheading an attempt to reunite those featured in the September 1955 Lowestoft Grammar School class line up.

By June, he had managed to identify over 200 of the 307 featured in the scroll photograph and now he has names for 297 of those in the line-up.

Together with Trevor Dye, who lives in Worlingham, he is in direct contact with 65 of these and they have managed to identify a further 150 who were not in the photograph and are in contact with 15 of them. Such has been the interest in the reunion that they have expanded their plan to include those who were in the school's fifth form from 1953 to 1958.

“Many of the 80 in direct contact with me say they are in contact with others so we probably have a total of just over 100 in some form of contact,” said Mike.

“The school is still thinking about their events for the centenary celebrations for next year and we are hoping for a time frame of around September 2009.”

What started as a simple idea between the two friends has soon snowballed into a major school reunion with the attempts to make contact with fellow former pupils taking some surprising turns.

“Some of the searches have been very interesting. I traced one man from Lowestoft to Nottingham to Africa to London, finally to a small village where he was given a message in a local supermarket by a friendly local inn owner that I called,” Mike said.

As well as trying to track down as many old school mates as possible, Mike is also on the lookout for a copy of the 1955 Junior School photograph. He also hopes that someone in Lowestoft might come forward to help organise the event with him.

Seeing the previous articles on the reunion, Cynthia Thurling, nee Cleveland, brought this photograph of the 1952 Lowestoft Grammar School form 5b.

The line-up reads: (back row) Mary, Anne Woodcock, Sheila Broadfoot, Glona Jenner and Beryl Wicks; (front row) Anne Chaplin, Cynthia Cleveland, Marie Glasscock, Daphne Tripp, Diane Utting and Gwen Harmer.

The Lowestoft Grammar School reunion is due to take place next year. If you are interested in attending or can help Mike with organising it, email michaelbristow@comcast.net or write to him at 8805 Boulder Rise, Eden Prairie, Mn 55347, USA.
