A TRAINING pool, health spa and better gym facilities could all feature as part of a multi-million-pound refurbishment of Lowestoft's main sports centre.

Proposals for a massive redevelopment at the Water Lane sports centre were given the go-ahead at a meeting in Beccles last night and now Waveney District Council is asking everyone in the town what they would like to see in the new complex.

With the creation of a second floor and an extra 1,500sq m of floor space, the enlarged building will mean that space for new sports and activities could be included - anything from treatment rooms and saunas to a children's play area and larger caf.

Vicky Collins, the council's principal service manager for leisure operations and facility development, said: 'This is a hugely exciting development and the valued input of our customers will help us to get it absolutely right. Water Lane was originally built in 1976 and has since been extended, but this is an opportunity to radically improve and refresh the site, providing outstanding contemporary 21st- century facilities for our customers.'

People in the town, including those who do not currently use the sports centre but would like to, are being asked to complete a survey to tell the council what facilities they think should be included.

Ms Collins said: 'The potential benefits of an enlarged and redeveloped leisure centre are huge, but we must create an experience that everybody wants to be part of.

'It is therefore really important that people tell us what sports and activities would get them through the door, what they feel is currently missing and what changes they would like to see.'

The council has already secured a 1m Sport England grant to improve the centre's swimming pool and hopefully provide a smaller training pool for swimming lessons.

The revamp of the centre has been designed to tie in with major improvements to the neighbouring Lowestoft College site, which is to include a new sixth-form centre.

The consultation survey can be completed from today until Tuesday, June 30. It can be completed online by following the consultation link at www.waveney.gov.uk or by telephone on 01502 588444. Hard copies will also be available at Water Lane leisure centre, Bungay pool and gym and the Marina centre in Lowestoft.
