A plaque and memorial will be unveiled to mark the 75th anniversary of the most destructive air raid on Lowestoft during the Second World War.

The Focke-Wulf 190 raid happened at 9pm on May 12, 1943 and the plaque and memorial disc to commemorate the lives lost will be placed in the upper High Street area by the Jack Rose Old Lowestoft Society.

The memorial will be placed on the site of the Jubilee Stores pub which was destroyed by a 500kg bomb – killing 16 people including sailors attending a birthday party.

Twenty–four Focke-Wulf 190 fighter bombers made it the biggest raid of the war. Thirty-two people died and 51 were injured. It resulted in 50 houses being demolished and more than 1,000 damaged including the pub and Watson's Garage.

The society has booked the Marina Theatre to stage a fundraising slideshow, Lowestoft at War, with Chris Brooks and Bob Collis at 2pm on Saturday, April 21 for the public to help with the project and to appreciate the difficulties Lowestoft went through in the conflict.

The society is inviting members of the public whose family or friends were affected by this air-raid to contribute their story and eye-witness accounts to be included in a brochure for the sake of posterity.

They can be sent to chairman of the society, Mr Brooks, at 356 London Road South, Lowestoft, NR33 0BQ or by email to christopherbrooks631@gmail.com by the date of the anniversary.

The society is also hoping people and organisations will pledge a sponsorship donation towards the £850-plus cost of the project.

All named sponsors will be listed in a brochure to be published after the event with details and images of the event and the plaques involved, one of which is ready and the other about to be produced as the artwork is completed.

Tickets for the fundraiser cost £6 plus a small box office fee, available to book by calling 01502 533200.
