SUFFOLK Sport, working in partnership with Suffolk Constabulary and SAFEchild, are holding a series of conferences and update workshops called 'Playing It Safe', to inform the local sporting community of essential and the latest valuable information regarding Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People.

'We all have a duty to safeguard and protect the children and young people that participate in sporting activities. With recent high profile cases of abuse involving children, it is more important than ever that everyone involved in sport understands their role and responsibilities and takes action to ensure their organisation is fulfilling them' said Vicki Askew, lead child protection officer for Suffolk Sport.

The first full day conference is to be held in Ipswich on Wednesday, April 29, at Suffolk Constabulary HQ and will be officially opened by the deputy chief constable Jacqui Cheer. Throughout the day, delegates will hear from Suffolk Constabulary about the roles of a variety of agencies across the county when dealing with referrals and allegations, SAFEchild will show organisations how to carry out a five-point safeguarding health check and the Safeguarding Children Board will raise awareness of their remit, structure and procedures under the Children's Act 2004. The conference will also address the importance of rigorous recruitment and the possible impact of the impending ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority) scheme. There is a further full day conference to be held on Tuesday, September 29, in Bury St Edmunds.

The full day conference will be followed by a series of update workshops starting on Monday, May 18, being held in each local authority area and aimed at sports club members. This will give clubs the chance to attend a local event that will help provide them with up to date relevant information to help their club develop its Safeguarding and Child Protection practices.
