‘A wonderful job’ - Customers enjoy socially-distanced day at Pleasurewood Hills

Though Woody Bear couldn’t make it to the party, there were plenty of impressed customers enjoying a day out at Pleasurewood Hills on its second re-opening weekend.

And despite running admissions at just 15pc capacity, the place felt busy on Sunday, July 12 - with queues building up outside attractions and food stalls all afternoon.

The sun helped create a sense of normality as park benches filled up with families - but sanitising stations, 2m distancing markers and a one-household-to-a-car policy on rollercoasters was a reminder that this was definitely a “new” normal.

For sales and marketing manager Andrew Fuller, the support from customers since the July 4 re-opening has been “phenomenal”.

He said: “The lockdown hit tourism hard, and it was frustrating that ‘hospitality and leisure’ were lumped together under one category because we run an entirely different show to pubs and restaurants.

“There’s a few close points of contact at the park - such as when you’re getting on a ride - but other than that this is a wide open space where people can keep their distance from one another and still have a lot of fun.

He added: “Staying closed wasn’t an option, and we’d have opened earlier if we could. This is peak season for us.

“Opening weekend was pretty quiet as I think people were reluctant to come out, but yesterday was really busy.

“It’s a shame that we’ve lost our international audiences for the time being but the support we have had from locals has been greatly appreciated.

“We’ve also lost Woody Bear this season because government guidance recommends against costume characters, and Woody Bear in particular is a magnet for excited children.”

Customers, however, were in no mood to complain.

One family had ventured from Tacolneston for the day and were thrilled to “finally be out and doing something”.

According to mum Sarah, the park had done a “wonderful job” of keeping people safe.

She said: “This is one of our first big days out since lockdown, and we’ve had a lovely time.

“Every little thing you do now will be somewhat daunting because so much has changed since March, but the way staff have been wiping everything down has left us feeling totally at ease.”

The same was true for Simon and Jacqueline Clow, who stood waiting for the rest of the family to join them after a spin on Wipeout.

Mr Clow said: “The queues are short, it’s well-distanced and the kids are so happy to be back out enjoying themselves once again.”
