Police in Yarmouth will be clamping down on young car enthusiasts over the bank holiday weekend to stop them creating a nuisance on the seafront.

The operation against the so-called Jetty Boys will see police and borough council environmental health officers patrol the South Beach and Marine Parade areas to remind drivers to be on their best behaviour behind the wheel.

This weekend's operation follows long running complaints that the Jetty Boys act antisocially by speeding, revving their engines loudly, performing screeching wheel spins and playing loud music.

During the last two bank holidays similar crack downs on young drivers saw eight fined for motoring and speeding offences, nine warnings issued and one car seized because it was uninsured.

Environmental health officers also issued eight noise abatement notices and warned a further 42 motorists about their noisy driving.

Explaining the need for this weekend's Jetty Boys operation, Sgt Craig Miller said: “The congregation of car enthusiasts on the South Beach area is an on-going problem which tends to increase at bank holiday weekends.

“The associated loud music, noise of wheels spinning, engines revving and headlights being shone through windows does affect the quality of life of local residents.

“These joint operations are not aimed to spoil anyone's fun but are aimed to educate young drivers to show consideration to people living nearby.”

Further joint operations will be carried out throughout the summer.

To report antisocial driving call Yarmouth police on 0845 4564567.
