Householders and motorists in Waveney are being asked not to encourage thieves by leaving doors and windows open in the hot weather.

In Lowestoft, three houses were burgled over the weekend after thieves got in through unlocked doors or windows and a number of cars in Carlton Colville were entered after they were left unlocked.

Now police are asking people to be more vigilant to help them in the fight against thieves.

Suffolk police Insp Stuart Weaver said: 'There still seems to be a sense that there is no need to lock up vehicles or homes. While in some ways it's pleasing to see that residents feel safe enough to do this, the reality is that we are making it very easy for opportunist criminals to steal our property.'

A house in Hawthorn Avenue, Lowestoft, was burgled between 9.30am and 5.15pm on Friday and a quantity of cash was stolen.

A small gold laptop computer was taken from a house in Mill Road between 2pm and 11pm on Saturday and a DVD and video player and games console were stolen from a house in Lorne Road between 12.50pm and 3.30pm on Sunday.

Anyone with information about any of the break-ins should contact Lowestoft police on 01986 835300.
