Pool campaigners funding boost
SUPPORTERS bidding to save the outdoor swimming pool in Beccles say they are already a third of the way towards raising the funds needed to re-open the facility in time for next summer.
SUPPORTERS bidding to save the outdoor swimming pool in Beccles say they are already a third of the way towards raising the funds needed to re-open the facility in time for next summer.
For the first time in 50 years and with a hot summer being forecast the pool, on Puddingmoor, will not open this season.
Beccles Lido Limited (BLL) put forward a business plan that would have allowed the pool to open for a short season after the usual essential repairs had been carried out, but WDC say that 100,000 is invested in the pool before it can open.
Now a number of business have stepped forward to support the scheme, both financially and with offers of materials or labour.
One of the directors of Beccles Lido Ltd, Shaun Crowley, urged business and the community to get behind the project.
'We now have a target to aim for - 100,000,' he said. 'This sounds a lot but we are already one third of the way there thanks to the very generous donations and grants that we have already secured. Longer term there will be other significant investment required, but once we are open and have proved we can run the pool then securing these funds will be easier.'

A progress report will be put before a special committee in the Autumn with a view to BLL operating the facility from 2010.
In the meantime supporters are rallying to raise funds, with organisers saying that 200 tickets sold every month in the new Beccles Lido Lottery would raise up to 5,000 each year towards repair and running costs.
Supporters will be at Beccles Community Fayre this Sunday, serving teas, cake and Pimms.
