Port's life must go on

I HEARD that the organisers of the Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival suggested that the bascule bridge openings during the period of the event should be curtailed.
What were they thinking about? Lowestoft is a commercial port and therefore movement of vessels in and out of the inner harbour are a necessary part of its activities.
It was noted that last year openings were delayed by those who couldn't wait and continued to cross the bridge after the red warning lights were activated. Once the bridge is clear the footpath gates and road barriers are closed only then can the bridge be raised. This does not only happen during the air festival days but practically every time a bridge opening occurs throughout the year.
As well as pedestrians, oblivious to the sound and lights or just not bothered, sauntering across the bridge and a last minute speeding mobility scooter, I've even experienced people leaning on the bridge rail, fascinated by the oncoming vessel, holding up the entire bridge opening process.

It's not just the bridge that causes delays, but also those who only think of themselves.
