THE final leg of the Round Britain Offshore Powerboat Race left Lowestoft this morning heading for Portsmouth.
The sleek powerboats arrived at Lowestoft yesterday as 40 craft darted around the town's coastline as part of the top sports event.
The boats are taking part in the Round Britain Offshore Powerboat Race, which reached the Suffolk port as the vessels sped the 200 nautical miles from Newcastle in the competition's penultimate leg.
From about 1pm hundreds of spectators lined the coast to watch the boats, which are racing along the coastline in 10 action-packed days.
So far the race has been affected by poor weather and several boats have broken down - but event organisers were glad to see that yesterday's seas were quite calm in comparison to previous days.
However one of the vessels had to be towed into port by a lifeboat crew from Cromer after it suffered a mechanical failure.
Ray Bulman, race spokesman, said: “Today has gone very well and because Lowestoft has a lot of holiday-makers we had a very good turn out of people.”
The Greek-owned Blue FPT is the current race leader and Lowestoft-based Ocean Pirate is taking part.
