A PROFESSIONAL pantomime is set to be staged at the Marina Theatre, in Lowestoft, later this year during the Christmas and new year period.

But all is not lost for the amateur Lowestoft Players who currently stage their festive shows at the complex.

For they have agreed to move their panto to late January so the theatre can bring in a professional troupe.

The group held an extraordinary general meeting at their headquarters in Stradbroke Road, Pakefield, last night over the plans and gave it their backing.

In a joint statement issued by the Marina and the Players this morning they said they had been carrying out extensive deliberations over the past few months.

And it added that they have now agreed that a professional pantomime production will be presented at the Waveney District Council-owned Marina for a run of around three weeks from mid December to early January.

Subsequent negotiations between management at the Marina and the Lowestoft Players have resulted in an agreement being reached to move the date of the Players' annual pantomime to late January.

The statement said: “This allows the theatre to stage a full-scale professional pantomime, enabling it to compete with other regional venues, provide a much-needed financial boost and assist in its audience development.

“In addition the venue has agreed favourable terms for the Lowestoft Players to enable them to continue presenting their popular musicals and pantomime during the next three years in the spring, autumn and festive season respectively.

“As a pantomime is a key factor in any theatre's annual diary, and with financial pressures mounting on the Marina, it has been agreed that the way forward will be for the venue to stage its own professional pantomime over the peak holiday period, thus enabling it to provide a significantly higher number of performances both for schools and on peak days including Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

“The management of the Marina Theatre has recognised the enormous contribution made to the provision of live theatre in the town by the Lowestoft Players and also the society's significant financial contributions to the Marina from its own pantomime productions. Therefore the management was keen to find a way which would ensure the Lowestoft Players would continue performing, providing a valuable contribution to community theatre in Lowestoft.”
