The landlord of a refurbished pub in Lowestoft has described how the new name and look of the venue was inspired by his late father- a boxer who sparred with Muhammad Ali and twice knocked out well-known fighter Lenny McLean.

David Field has taken on the former Havelock pub on Love Road, and renamed it Fieldys in recognition of his father Cliff. Mr Field, who now owns two pubs in the town after reopening the Bayfields on the High Street earlier in the year, is keen to attract new customers along with some of the locals who have been unable to visit their regular- as it has been closed for around five months.

The complete refurbishment has seen Mr Field and his team tidy up the pub and redecorate its interior, with visitors able to enjoy a function room, home cooked food, live music, a games room, free Wifi and Sky Sports.

Mr Field was keen to give his father, known as the Guv'nor, a legacy by naming the pub after him.

'My father passed away a couple of years ago and I just thought I would give him a legacy,' Mr Field said.

'He had a couple of pubs in Hemel Hempstead and Watford and he got me into the trade. I think he would be really happy with this.

'I was just looking about and thought it was another business venture and I will try to bring the pub back to the community.

'It was shut when I took it over and had a bit of a bad reputation so I have reopened it and completely refurbished it; trying to keep it traditional in the process.'

Mr Field added that it has taken a considerable amount of time to refurbish the pub, but he is keen to give it 'a new lease of life' within the community.

'I think it's been shut for around five months and I have had people come in who didn't even know the pub was here.

'We are looking to host barbecues, discos, karaoke and also trying to get the pool and darts teams back.

'I am hoping to do well here by trying to keep it family friendly and we will have a kids play area as well.

'I now have 11 staff in total both here and at Bayfields.'

'We will also do a deal when the football is on or something, a burger and a pint maybe.'

Andrew Burley, assistant manager at Fieldys added:

'It is good for the area to have the pub back because it was shut for ages and it has had a total revamp. It had a bad name before but it is much better now.'

In January of this year, Mr Field completed the refurbishment of the Bayfields 19th century Victorian hotel and public bar after it was destroyed by a devastating blaze in November 2014.
