THERE was a very special treat for youngsters from across Lowestoft as they were “enchanted” by the sounds of the world's top orchestra.

During Friday's rehearsals - ahead of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's Tchaikovsky Gala at the town's Marina Theatre- there was a unique opportunity for students from Lowestoft and Norfolk to experience top-quality music.

Organised in association with Enterprise Lowestoft, last week was only the second time that the rehearsals had been opened up to primary school pupils.

Pupils from Pakefield and Oulton Broad Primary, Roman Hill Middle and East Norfolk Sixth Form College were among those present.

“I felt enchanted,” said Jessica Cyprus, of Pakefield Primary.

Echoing those sentiments, Elise Reid, of Roman Hill Middle, added: “The violinist fingers were moving at 100 mph, it was thrilling.”

Daisy Mason, from Oulton Broad Primary, said: “I loved it when the music reached a crescendo.” While the East Norfolk Sixth Form College revealed it was “awesome.”

These were just some of the comments from young people who watched the RPO rehearsals prior to the penultimate concert on Friday in the orchestra's 2008 residency.

Ruth Wharrier, the music and arts co-ordinator from Pakefield Primary, said: “It was a wonderful opportunity for the pupils to listen to a live orchestra.”

Helping to organise this special event, Cheryl Willis, of Enterprise Lowestoft said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to be able to watch the interactions of the conductor with the orchestra and experience music of the highest calibre.

“The Marina Theatre and the RPO are very enthusiastic to encourage young people to help nurture a love of music and Enterprise Lowestoft enables this to happen and is dedicated to raising aspirations.”
