An event to celebrate the importance of learning different languages enabled children to discover the cultural diversity on offer across Europe.

Held at Ormiston Denes Academy, year-nine students from the school worked with more than 100 children from institutions including Woods Loke, Corton, Poplars and Somerleyton Primary schools at the event which was linked with the European Day of Languages.

The fun sessions involved interactive experiences, which allowed the children to collect stamps to be placed on a 'language passport' as they made their way through a variety of workshops and activities.

There was even the chance for the children to meet themed puppets which helped to engage them in conversation.

Once the children had completed their travel passports, a refreshments bar was opened and students were able to order their French and Spanish food and drinks, the requests being made in the correct language.

At the end of their celebrations, all pupils were presented with a French and Spanish bookmark as mementos of their day at Ormiston Denes Academy.

Julie Mayo, project manager at the academy said: 'This has been a wonderful day for both our students and the students from our local primary schools.

'It has been lovely to see all students working together to complete their challenges, and to see students learning in a fun and interactive way.

'As an academy the most important thing to us is that, by the end of year-six, primary school students can leave their primary schools feeling safe, secure, happy and enthused about their move to a new secondary school, regardless of which secondary school they may go on to attend.

'This has been another opportunity to allow these students to experience life at a secondary school, and grow in confidence about the move that they will all have to make at the end of year-six.'
